Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the prestigious cup on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger found the net early on.

However, Marseille struck two times in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying seconds to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
