Elite Athletes Call on Iranian Authorities to Stop Death Sentence of Champion Boxer

Over two dozen Olympic medallists, coaches and additional global sports figures have put their names to a letter calling for a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is facing execution in Iran.

Increasing Worldwide Condemnation

The appeal said that Vafaei Sani’s situation was not unique and emphasized Iran’s past of executing competitors for their beliefs, including Habib Khabiri, leader of the soccer squad, and a volleyball captain, skipper of the national women’s volleyball team.
