Bolsonaro detained after being considered a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
