A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the hours before former President Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.
A single trader, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.
Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in betting activity right before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other platform users also made significant sums from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation introduced on recently would prevent government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from sports to political events.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
